Based on our research, and interviews traditional museum formats often fail to capture the attention and interest of high school students. Many perceive museums as static and passive, disconnected from their digitally oriented lifestyles. While museums hold immense historical and artistic significance, they often struggle to engage modern audiences, particularly the younger generation. The conventional formats and static exhibits often fail to captivate the attention of today's digitally oriented visitor youth.
Our design of a game-based navigation system - Stick2gether takes the form of a fun treasure hunt type of experience. It balances competition between groups with cooperation - engaging students in tasks and riddles that guide them to specific exhibits.
The game is facilitated through the main interface - a handheld 'projector' that students hold on to project the riddles, approve answers, gain points, and advance. Bluetooth-low-energy (BLE) beacons scattered around the museum are connected to bluetooth-enabled enabled Stick2gether devices to locate the position of the groups and provide relevant riddles to their proximity.
The navigation system acts as an intelligent agent, considering various factors to understand their preferences. It then directs them towards exhibits that are most likely to capture their interest.
Gathering qualitative data by engaging with the target group to understand their pain points yelded great value. Involving various stakeholders and seeking expert guidance drove actionable insight and advanced the project forward.
